we thought to pass that law for families like ryan's. we know the heartbreak of a broken health care system. i don't mind if folks think i care, i do care. and i don't know exactly what the other sides' proposing. i guess you can call it romney doesn't care but this law is here to stay. we are not going to refight the battles of the last four years. we are going to implement this law and make the health care system work for families all across america. it is time to move forward. that is the choice in this election. of course, this isn't just the only battle that they want to refight. they want to refight battles we thought were settled in the last century. in november you will have some say as to whether women should be trusted to make their own health care decisions.

i think they are. you'll have some say as to whether students who were brought here by their parents as infants and have gone to school here and understand themselves to be americans and pledge allegiance that suddenly they should be kicked out of the only country they have ever known. i don't think so. i have a different view. you'll have some say as to whether we should rewrite the constitution the way the other side's proposing to prevent gay americans from being able to marry the person they love. you can reaffirm that the strength of our character doesn't come from shoving people to the sidelines. it comes from hearing every

voice. harvesting every talent, realizing that in america we are greater together than we are on our own. that's who we are. that's who we are. and that's what is at stake in this election. this november you get to decide the future of the afghanistan war. governor romney had nothing to say about afghanistan last week. he hasn't offered a plan for the 33,000 troops who will have come home from this war by the end of this month. he said that ending the war in iraq was tragic. i think it was the right thing to do and i said i would do it and we did. i said we would take out bin laden and we did. we are bringing our troops home

from afghanistan. and i set a time table we will have them out of there by 2014. governor romney doesn't have a time table. i think he is wrong. that is what is at stake in this election. as long as i'm commander in chief we will serve our veterans as well as they served us because nobody who serves us should have to fight for a job or a roof over their heads when they come home. >> the president of the united states at the university of colorado in boulder, colorado to apparently a very supportive crowd talking about ending the war in afghanistan to trying to secure jobs especially for veterans and talking about obama care saying he actually likes the name because yes he does care. our athena jones is traveling with the president there in boulder, colorado. let's talk about that youth vote.

we are talking about a rally constituted mostly of young people. it was very pivotal in 2004. will it be just as vital this year? >> reporter: well the campaign certainly thinks so. fire officials put this crowd at 13,000. yesterday a crowd of 10,000 in iowa. what you just mentioned is going to be very important. this event people started lining up very early this morning. all along that line people going along telling people how to get registered and make sure that they are registered and make sure they can vote early. colorado is an early voting state. much of what we heard from the president is very similar from yesterday in iowa. he spent a lot of time rebutting the republicans at the convention. one thing he did at the top of this speech that is interesting is he said they put together a challenge, challenging the folks at colorado state university not

that far from here, challenging each school to see how many people they can get registered to vote. many people will be young voters that helped put him over the top last time around. as you can see they seem pretty enthusiastic. we'll see what comes out of it later. >> athena jones reporting from boulder traveling with the president. after stops in colorado, ohio and louisiana the president will head to charlotte, north carolina for the democratic national convention. breanna is already there. is he writing his own speech or fine tuning it? >> reporter: he has been busy on this trip that athena is on. he has been busy writing his speech. we know he has been accompanied by his chief speech writer. and he has certainly been working on it. he has given the crowd on this

trip a peek as he is talking about things we have heard before. there is a choice and between him and between mitt romney. he is going to sort of i think be framing it as such that as we have heard him say before that mitt romney he said the ideas that he gave during his convention was reruns and said you might as well been looking at it on a black and white television. you will be hearing him talk about pressing forward and the discussion of optimism that we have heard throughout some of his campaign rallies. and he'll be framing mitt romney as kind of trying to go backwards. let me tell you a little bit about what is going on in charlotte. if we can pan over and i will ask you to ignore the stand holding up shade we have here. you can see they are starting to set up check points. this is because here we are.

it's sunday everything gavels to an opening on tuesday. and what they are trying to do is make sure the delegates can get in. staff reporters can get in. they are also trying to make sure that it is a secure area. this is a national security event and there are protests going on. just a short distance from here there have been some protesters including occupy wall street south protesting the convention before it starts. >> appreciate that from charlotte, north carolina. you may know barack obama the president. what about barack obama the man? jessica spoke to the president and his closest friends. mitt romney and paul ryan are taking the day off from stumping. the republican presidential nominee will begin preparing for his presidential debates in mock

sessions this week. remnants of isaac still a force of nature dumping rain in the midwest. more than 250,000 homes and businesses in louisiana and mississippi still don't have power five daysfter isaac hit there. republican nominee mitt romney visited louisiana on friday. meanwhile isaac hasn't quite let up yet. on saturday the storm dumped as much as six inches of rain in the midwest. that area has been fighting severe drought. flash flood warnings are in effect today for parts of kathleen kennedken tucky, tennessee. residents of louisiana are cautiously relieved after officials lifted an evacuation order there. people who live near slidell north of new orleans have been told to leave because of water

in a canal that jets off the pearl river was dangerously high and threatening to burst through a lock. how did they resolve that situation? >> reporter: there was a great deal of focus on that navigational canal that you mentioned that had those two locks, lock one and lock two. contained a lot of water. there was concern about the possibility of those locks failing. now this parish that took action they went into that area controlled by the u.s. army corps of engineers. they went in before and they opened these valves. when they opened the valves on these two locks it relieved a lot of pressure. still we do know that there will be flooding. there was concern that had water gotten through those locks and gotten out here it would be a lot more flooding. well, right now that is not going to be the case. it looks like we will deal with

the flooding that water coming down river. i nt to bring in christina garcia. we have seen people come by all day checking the river conditions but you have been doing something very specific. would you mind showing us what you are doing. >> concerned resident. i have been counting up the feet from where we started off the edge of the landing all the way up. when i first started it was like 14. now i'm down to like probably ten. >> reporter: i don't know if you can hear this but she has been coming by. she has come by several times. >> i started. like i said it was 15 feet when i first started. it is starting to come up slowly. there is some concern. we are trying to take all precautions. >> reporter: of all the people we have seen come by today we have noticed you doing this. your home is nearby? >> it is right around the

earlier this week one of the media organizations he was working for released information siting a senior diplomat with the czech republic saying he has been detained by the syrian government and being held. that is the oofficial line coming from the czech republic side. the state department is not offering much guidance. >> what do we understand had been happening? what kind of reporting was he doing before he went missing? because i'm sure his family is asking whether there is a real correlation there between what he was reporting on or perhaps where he was reporting. >> he was doing extremely gutsy reporting and dangerous and sensitive reporting. going as far as to embed himself with the free syrian army. he was spending time in a suburb of damascus as well as places like holms.

the state department did release a statement to cnn earlier this week. we got a statement from the deputy spokesman saying we are working with our czech protecting power in syria to get information on his welfare and whereabouts and we appreciate the efforts of the czech mission on behalf of our citizens and said we are seeing news reports that mr. tice is in syrian custody. we urge the syrian government move as soon as possible. >> he is a former marine turned journalist. this really is his first journalist assignment. >> this is sort of one of his best. >> even though he is used to being in conflict situations. >> he spent time on a u.s. carrier. this is his first time in this type of situation in a reporting capacity. lots of questions as to his

president obama busy on the campaign trail. he is in colorado right now continuing the push in swing states in particular on his way to the democratic national convention this week. jessica yellin sat down for an in depth interview with the president. she is giving us a preview now. >> right now it's easy to get caught up in the little spats of the campaign news cycle. we look at major events that shaped the last 3 1/2 years, the president's time in office. one of the recurrent themes is the partisanship in washington

especially meaningful because in 2008 the president campaign saying in part that he would heal the bitter divides in washington and around the country. so in my interview with president obama i talked to him about why he hasn't built more relationships with some of those washington insiders who could have helped get his agenda through. >> sometimes michelle and i not doing the circuit and going out to dinners with folks is perceived as us being cruel. it has more to do with us being parents. when we are in town here in washington in the evenings, 6:30 we want to be at the dinner table with our kids and i want to be helping with their homework. i think sometimes that is interpreted as me not wanting to be out there slapping backs and wheeling and dealing.

>> if you are reelected your girls will be older and will probably have their own weekend plans. >> it is already starting to happen. >> do you think you might do more outreach with members of congress? >> my hope is that getting past this election people will have an opportunity to maybe step back and say the differences that divide us aren't as a important as the common bonds we have as americans. some of that i'm sure will require additional effort on my part hopefully. the other side, as well. >> in the documentary we delve into the president's family life and some of the issues of partisanship in washington. we talk to some of the president's closest aides including secretary clinton, his former personal assistant, reggie love, former chief of

it on a black and white tv with some rabbit ears. >> it was a quick stop for the president in colorado. now he will be heading off to toledo, ohio. tomorrow he travels to louisiana to survey the damage from what was hurricane isaac. both the president and his republican challenger, mitt romney, trying to get their messages across in these crucial campaign swings. mr. romney got to sell himself last week at the gop convention. now it is the president's turn in charlotte, north carolina. what will be the focus? >> good to see you ron. >> good to see you, fred. in charlotte with the sweat to prove it. >> i know. it is sweaty isn't it? the goal of the republican convention was to reintroduce mitt romney, to humanize him,

will he spell out specific proposals for term number two or reminding america what he has accomplished during his term? >> i think the two principle goals will be kind of offensive in terms of romney and critical in terms of obama second term. the first goal has to be to kind of paint over the picture, repaint the picture they have been working on about mitt romney all summer in swing states. they spent millions of dollars of ads portraying him as the problem in the ecomy and arguing he has enriched the few at the expense of the many. the republican campaign made it very concerted effort to undo that portrait. more important than that and what has to be the critical element of the convention is give the american voters a better sense of what president obama would do in a second term. that has been the biggest

missing piece so far. it is hard to call this convention a success if the public does not have a clearer sense of what a second obama term would bring them. >> the president said yesterday when he made his way back to iowa, he says i'm coming back to where it all started four years ago. we are talking about a very different climate now. then his narrative was let's get beyond the bitterness and anger that has consumed washington. today as washington post reminds us the climate is polarized. instead of cooperation, i'm quoting from an article in the washington post, there is confrontation. instead of civility there is rudeness. the political system seems frozen. >> given that president obama's dialogue has to change, does it not? >> yes. and it already has. we are living through as dan

notes highest level of party line voting in congress since the late 19th century. there is a trend that predates president obama. we have been moving in this direction for several decades with levels of party unity. president came in promising a different tone and faced enormous resistance from rae republicans. in his first two years passed a health care bill without a vote from a single republican. after 2010 he tried to move in a different direction. that hit a dead end with the debt ceiling standoff last summer and has moved in a more partisan direction. really trying to draw sharp distinctions for this campaign. he says after 2012 if he wins there will be a reset much like bim clinton.

we'll have to wait and see. there is no question that washington is experiencing levels of party unity and conflict that are really unprecedented in our experience for at least the last century. >> obama has to be specific. at the end of the convention people feel like they didn't get real specificity then they are in trouble. can we refleck on the rnc. did they miss an opportunity by spelling out what it will do, what the nominee will do specifically as opposed to criticizing the president. we heard ran saying clint eastwood is a commentary on romney. hardly anyone can remember what romney said. that is a big problem, isn't it? >> it was kind of odd they did not put a lot of emphasis on their agenda. what makes it especially odd is there is an ambitious agenda.

romney is offering the most aggressive agenda since ronald reagan in 1980. a 20% cut in marginal tax rate. changing medicaid and food stamps into grants. repealing epa's authority. you can go down the list. they are looking to retrench government at least as aggressively as obama moved to expand it. they didn't highlight any of that and put much greater emphasis on trying to reach out for voters who may have voted for obama in '08 and are disappointed now in essence saying it is okay to change your line. it was an odd distinction. the differences between the candidates are very profound. as we go through the fall i think we will see these reemerge in the debates if not sooner. >> try to stay cool as best you can in charlotte, north

carolina. hot state. thanks so much. you can take part nft dnc round table tuesday. join wolf blitzer for a live virtual chat. you will get real answers in real time. cnn election round table is at noon eastern time tuesday. right now to louisiana where authorities lifted a mandatory evacuation earlier today for about 1,200 homes near the mississippi border. residents had been told to leave because water in a canal was dangerously high. it was threatening to burst through a lock until engineers released some water and relieved the pressure. the river is not expected to crest or i should say it will be cresting tomorrow is the expectation. until then 5,000 homes are at risk of flooding. hurricane isaac has cleared

out of the gulf coast. people can still feel the effects every time they go to the gas station. the average price of a gallon of regular gas was $3.83. that is up 9.4% from the end of july. alison kosik joins me on the phone. isaac is gone at least as a major threat as a hurricane. why are we still seeing the high gas prices? >> you know you can blame hurricane isaac for the gas prices. the good news is you can pretty much blame isaac only for the short term. you expect to see gas prices stay higher in the short term and then go lower in the longer term. the reason isaac is because it hit the gulf coast. 40% of the petroleum is located along the gulf coast. the good news is the refineries were not damaged. the reason isaac is having the

huge impact is because the refineries had to shut down to cut back during the storm. that knocked out hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil production a day. that down time sent prices higher. also there has been a refinery fire that happened two weeks ago. there were also refinery fires in california that shut down production, as well. all of that drives up oil prices and driving gas prices higher. it is the law of supply and demand. the less gas on the market you are seeing gasoline prices go higher. >> what kind of relief might we expect and what course of time? >> what analysts are saying is we will see gas prices stick around right where they are. we have seen the leveling off today. the prices should go lower.

the thing is it may take some time before we see that relief at the pump. one analyst puts it this way saying prices tend to rise faster on the way up and then fall on the way down. that doesn't help consumers at all. one thing that could help bring gas prices down, the refinery from switching from gasoline, that may really help with the relief at the pump that we are waiting for. >> alison kosik thanks for joining us. appreciate it. the role of faith is getting a lot of attention. how big of an impact will it have on your choice for president? go-gurt? yep...doh. the founder of the unification church famous for holding mass weddings and some world wide has died. rev rn sun myung moon. moon whose followers were sometimes called the cult leader. he served a federal prison term for tax evasion. he was 92. let's talk about more reverend moon's legacy. i am joined by cnn religion editor. dan, how large of an impact did reverend moon make around the world? >> as you mentioned he was a really controversial figure especially in the united states. he himself claimed to be the messiah who was finishing up the work that jesus christ left undone. so a lot of folks called him a cult leader.

but he also did start something of a global movement. and i think whenever a charismatic leader founder someone like moon dies there is always the question of what happens to the movement. now one of his sons will be taking over the church. there is a question of if the movement has a future and how will it look going forward. >> let's talk about how religion might be playing a role in the conventions and presidential race now. how important is religion to voters in the selection of who should be in the white house? >> it's really important. it's a really good predictor, actually of how an american casts a ballot for a president. in recent elections it has been a better predictor how often you go to church than income level than whether you live in a rural area or a city or whether you are a man or woman. it is a really strong predictor

of how somebody votes. the tendency is the more often you go to church the more likely you are to vote for a republican for a president. that is why you saw governor romney at the convention start to open up a little bit about his mormonism and church life. i think he wants to make a connection to church going voters because he really needs their vote. >> do you think that president obama during his convention will be as compelled to talk about being a christian? >> he might. if you look at polls only about half the country knows obama is even a christian. 17% of americans still think he is a muslim which is not true. if you remember in 2004 at the democratic convention it was obama's debut as a national politician. one of the big take away lines was talking about there is an awesome guy in the blue states that people in the blue states worship. i think you might see that language again.

after a mishap at a monster truck event in oregon. an on looker captured this video on his cell phone of an out of control truck driving into a panicked crowd. the driver says the rear wheels spun out and crashed. right after the crash he gut out to check on the injured. federal investigators are trying to figure out what caused a plane to explode in front of thousands of spectators, killing the pilot. everything started pretty normal with three planes flying in formation at the quadcity air show. then all of a sudden one of the planes nose dived into a field. witnesses watched in horror as the plane exploded into a giant fire ball. the quadcity times website is identifying the pilot at 58-year-old glen smith of pr
